I was born in Philadelphia to two star-struck college student lovers who never intended to stay together but tried, to disastrous effect, to be a family, briefly. I am bi-racial. I like to call myself a light-skinned cat.
I got a scholarship to Columbia University, partially based on my poetry and moved to New York City at 17. I stayed! I studied History and consider myself an amatuer historian in that I read it a lot and binge on my favorite podcasts (I love Ancient and Medieval the most) and make things up about the past to suit my carefully sculpted narrative. Just kidding. After graduating from college, I worked as a concert promoter producing mostly national and international jazz acts like Sonny Rollins and Herbie Hancock at venerable NYC venues like Carnegie Hall but also the Central Park Zoo. When not grinding, I studied acting and eventually made my way to playing Valere in “Tartuffe” off-Broadway (in English). I was also playing music and landed the role of George Harrison in an off-off- Broadway musical. All the while, playing bars and clubs solo acoustic or in forgotten bands. I was on the verge of breaking into film but a producer tried to “Diddy” me in his office when discussing a role I landed. The mafia warned me to withdraw from another lead I had booked so their “associate” could get the gig – I won’t say who or what film, but he is famous and you wouldn’t know about his ties. And, I was in love with a Scandinavian woman who went back to Europe citing the instability of my lfe, inviting me to move with her but my destiny is here. These events broke my will so I abandoned myself and enrolled in an MBA program.
Misery.
I had big jobs at places like Google, Hearst Magazines and Nielsen. But, one must be true to one’s calling and the fit was never right. It was like when Jonah refused to go to Nineveh. Nothing else would work. I never stopped writing songs and one day, the whole world crashed around me and all I had was Music. Thank God. Its all I wanted from what I had. I call my music Gnosis music. Gnosis is a Hellenistic Greek word for knowledge. It is associated with a knowledge relating to spiritual divinty in man. Spiritual knowledge. I write songs. I take photos. I joke around with comedy sketches and make broad philosophical pronouncements I call “The Philosopher’s Code”. I also write fiction and am working on a novel titled “From The Epic Saga of The Book of Larry From The Story of Larry as Told by Larry” I can’t get into it here. I live alone in Brooklyn.
My motto is: I don’t know. It’s amazing how much that statement can encompass.
